At 26, embarking on the project "Like Daughter, Like Mother" carried profound
significance, particularly as I navigated the intricacies of identity formation and
artistic expression. Growing up as a Singaporean in Australia added layers to my
journey. My mother, a figure of strength and influence, shaped much of my
aspirations and perceptions.
However, as I delved deeper into the art world, I realised the necessity of forging my
own path. While her guidance remained invaluable, pursuing art demanded a deeper
exploration of self, separate from her influence.
"Like Daughter, Like Mother" draws its essence from the saying "like mother like
daughter," but it also challenges the notion by emphasising the reciprocal nature of
influence between generations. It became my personal odyssey, not merely to
capture intergenerational exchanges but to unravel my identity. It symbolises a
pivotal moment of self-discovery and the assertion of my unique voice amidst cultural
fusion and artistic pursuits. - Alexandria Lee
